About SoCal Science Café

About the Director | Director's Message

SoCal Science Café is a place at the intersection of science and life where scholars mix and mingle with the like-minded. You'll find The Science Café at the intersection of Science and Life. It's where scientific research and lattes converge. The general public is invited to engage with university scholars and policy makers on a wide variety of topics, from oil & energy to black holes.

Each month, we will explore doing a variety of different activities: hearing from scientist speakers about the latest breaking scientific discoveries; hosting a "trivia night" at a local bar, restaurant, or cafe, or conducting an event in cooperation with a local science museum or other facility, or watching clips of NOVA's new public television series, "NOVA scienceNOW", produced by WGBH-Boston.

NOVA scienceNOW website

NOVA scienceNOW, with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, host, brings science to the public in a blend of "60 minutes" and "CNN" formats, with science dispatches from around the globe and from many disciplines.  Members of the public and non-scientists are welcome to join us at our events! Please spread the word and invite your friends to join. Also, check out our Blog, at

The Science Café Blog

Major funding for Science Café events is provided by the UC Irvine Schools of Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences.  Also, we are grateful to the UC Irvine and Orange County chapters of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society, for their support.

Your Host,
Brian Hart, Ph.D.
